It’s unbelievable what’s in many commercial dog treats! Nothing is too bad or gross to grind up and have other people feed their beloved pets–hooves, feathers, beaks, and other body parts that would be otherwise trash often wide up in commercial pet food and treats. Yuck!

You can buy quality treats from a fancy pet store but it’s so easy to make your own. It’s fun and saves you a lot of money!

You have so much more control over the ingredients and can add-in health boosting ingredients like flaxseeds easily and much cheaper when you make your own dog treats.

Let’s go through the steps:

Choose a recipe. From cheesy cottage cheese biscuits to apple-cinnamon pupcakes, there’s something for everyone. You can play with the recipes too, try substituting a different type of flour for more health benefits.

Decide on a type of flour–Expand beyond whole wheat or regular white with rye or oat flour. Since these are used less, there are animals allergic to them. There are also lots of other flours you can try.

Choose add-ins–nuts, cheese, p-nut butter, and more will make a treat your dog will be delighted to eat.

Decide a shape, will you use cookie cutters to cut them in the shapes of squirrels or mail carriers? Or will you just spoon the dough onto the cookie sheet? After Lucy won’t know.

Bake

Let cool. Max may be very interested in what comes out of the oven but make him wait until they won’t burn his mouth.

Store. The harder and more dried out they are, the longer they’ll last. If you bake something with a lot of moisture–like a muffin or pupcake–you’ll prolong their life by refrigerating them.
