What is the best way to clean plush/stuffed dog toys?

I&#8217;ve noticed some of my puppies stuffed toys are getting kind of smelly.  Most of the tags say to &#8220;surface wash&#8221; the toy.  Anybody have any good suggestions on cleaning them?
